Deputy Speaker urges youth to take stand against corruption

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Barrister Kaiser Kamal has called on young people to play a strong role in preventing corruption and ensuring transparency, accountability and the rule of law at every level of society and the state. He made the call while addressing the inaugural session of the two-day Bangladesh Youth Model United Nations 2026 (BYMUN) conference, organised by Future Bangladesh at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Friday. The deputy speaker said future leaders must go beyond developing their personal skills and qualifications and speak out for transparency, accountability and the rule of law in different sectors.Urging students not to limit themselves to the race for GPA-5 results, he stressed the need to develop creativity, positive thinking and an inclusive outlook. The younger generation must take the lead in building a democratic, humane and world-class Bangladesh by making effective use of their talent and innovative abilities, he said.Recalling the role of young people in the country's historic movements and struggles, Kaiser Kamal said generations of young people had taken to the streets in pursuit of social dignity, equality and justice. He noted that a large proportion of those killed during the July-August 2024 mass uprising were young people. Carrying forward their sacrifices and aspirations, the younger generation now bears a major responsibility for taking the country forward by learning from past experiences, he added. The deputy speaker also urged young people who go abroad for higher education to return home after completing their studies and contribute to the country's development and governance.Emphasising democratic tolerance, he said differences of opinion were a natural part of democracy. A key quality of effective leadership was the ability to listen to others' arguments rather than impose one's own views, he added. He also encouraged young people to observe parliamentary sessions to gain practical knowledge of parliamentary proceedings and policy debates.Among others, Prime Minister's Office Adviser and Spokesperson Mahdi Amin, Principal Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals Professor Dr SM Abdul-Awal, and BRAC University Registrar Dr David Dowland addressed the inaugural session.Organisers said around 500 young delegates from more than 200 schools, colleges and universities across all 64 districts are taking part in the two-day Model United Nations conference.
