The proposed ninth pay scale recommends increasing the basic salaries of government employees by up to 100%, with the proposal covering all grades from 1 to 20.The new pay structure is planned to be implemented in two phases. Basic salaries would be introduced in the first year, followed by house rent and other allowances in the second year.All members of the secretary-level committee have signed the final report, taking the process one step closer to implementation.The details were published in an e-book titled “180 Days of the People’s Government”, released by the Prime Minister’s Office to mark the government’s first 180 days in office.According to the e-book, Tk 89,836 crore has been allocated for salaries and allowances of government employees in the 2026-27 fiscal year. Including pensions and gratuities, the total allocation stands at Tk 1,41,434 crore.The ninth National Pay Commission was formed on July 27, 2025, nearly 12 years after the eighth pay commission. The commission, headed by former finance secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan, submitted its report on January 21 this year.The commission had recommended raising salaries and allowances by 100% to 140%, while retaining the existing 20-grade structure. It proposed increasing the minimum basic salary from Tk 8,250 to Tk 20,000 and the maximum from Tk 78,000 to Tk 1,60,000.Later, a 10-member committee headed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani was formed on April 21 to recommend how the new pay structure should be implemented.Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury had earlier said in parliament that the government was taking steps to implement a new pay structure from July 1.The final decision on the salary increase, implementation timeline and allowance structure now rests with the government.
