The meeting is being held alongside the annual
meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank from
October 12 to 18.
Disruptions to shipping through the Strait of
Hormuz have pushed up global energy prices, putting pressure on government
spending and household budgets, particularly in the Gulf region and Asia.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and
World Bank Group President Ajay Banga are expected to attend. However, US
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will skip the meeting due to domestic
commitments. Deputy Treasury Secretary Francis Brooke and Under Secretary for
International Affairs Erin Brown will represent Washington.
Rising public debt is also expected to feature
prominently, as government debt in the United States, Canada, Japan, Italy and
France has exceeded 100% of GDP.
Trade imbalances, particularly US concerns over
China’s state-led industrial policies and large trade surplus, will also be on
the agenda.
The discussions are expected to help shape the agenda for the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December 14-15 in Miami, Florida.
