The officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram, Abu Zayed Mohammad Nazmun Noor, has been transferred to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), amid discussions over a recent robbery near the police station and a flash procession by leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League.The transfer order was issued on Monday (September 21), signed by Additional Inspector General of Police (Administration) AKM Awlad Hossain. Nazmun Noor took charge of Kotwali Police Station only three months ago.According to the order, Nazmun Noor and four other police personnel have been asked to obtain release orders and join their new workplaces by September 22. Failure to do so will result in them being considered “stand released” from September 23.Robbery behind the police stationThe transfer came shortly after a robbery in broad daylight near Kotwali Police Station drew widespread attention.A video circulating on social media shows two men stopping a rickshaw at Satish Babu Lane in Patharghata on Saturday morning and allegedly snatching money and a mobile phone from a passenger at knifepoint. The suspects later fled in a battery-run auto-rickshaw.As the incident took place just behind the police station, it triggered criticism and public concern. Police later arrested a man named Monir Hossain and seized the auto-rickshaw allegedly used in the robbery. Efforts are underway to arrest the others, police said.Flash procession raises questionsAnother incident that recently drew attention was a flash procession allegedly involving leaders and activists of the banned Chhatra League on the busy Lalkhan Bazar-Kazi Deuri road.Photos and videos of the procession spread on social media, prompting questions over police surveillance in the busy and densely populated area.Earlier controversy in PatiyaNazmun Noor had also faced controversy while serving as OC of Patiya Police Station.On the night of July 1 last year, a dispute reportedly broke out between police and activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement over the handover of a Chhatra League leader from Rangamati district.The activists alleged that police baton-charged them inside the station, leaving at least 23 people injured. Police, however, said they were forced to use force to bring the situation under control.The protesters later blocked the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar highway and surrounded the DIG office for nearly nine hours. Following the protests, Nazmun Noor was withdrawn from Patiya Police Station the next night and attached to the DIG office.He was later posted to Sandwip Police Station before being appointed OC of Kotwali in June this year. The latest Police Headquarters order did not specify any reason for transferring Nazmun Noor to the DMP. Police have described the move as part of a routine administrative process.
