Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev has described the US decision to suspend planned sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia’s energy sector as a historic moment, arguing that the move could help avert significant damage to the US economy and global markets.
US
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday suspending the
planned measures aimed at Russia’s energy revenues. The restrictions were
scheduled to take effect two days later.
In
a social media post, Dmitriev said the Trump administration’s decision to
suspend the proposed Graham Act was an important and genuinely historic
moment. He claimed that implementing the legislation would have severely harmed
the US economy and global markets.
The
suspension comes amid renewed debate over Washington’s policy towards Moscow,
following tensions between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Neither
Putin nor the Kremlin has yet commented on the decision. On Friday, Putin,
dressed in military attire, said Moscow was planning to seize the remaining
parts of eastern Ukraine.
The
proposed legislation, named after the late US Senator Lindsey Graham, sought to
impose sanctions on Russia’s energy and defence sectors, as well as on Putin
and other senior Russian officials.
Western countries have imposed successive sanctions on Moscow since Russia launched its military offensive in Ukraine in 2022. The prolonged conflict has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions.
