Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque
passed the order following an application by the investigation officer of the
case, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Amir Hossain of Jatrabari Police Station.
SI Mohin Uddin of the prosecution department
confirmed the development.
Iqbal was brought from the CMM court lockup for
the hearing at 3:50pm on Thursday. The magistrate took her seat at 4:01pm.
During the hearing, defence lawyers, including
Chowdhury Md Galib Rakib, sought proper medical treatment for the accused in
jail, citing his age and social status.
On the other hand, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruqui
argued in favour of showing him arrested in the case.
The prosecutor alleged that Iqbal had attended
meetings with Sheikh Hasina at Ganabhaban during the July uprising to discuss
suppressing the movement and had extended support to her government. He also
alleged that Iqbal was rewarded with the position of information adviser and a
leadership role at DBC News for his support.
Faruqui further claimed that Iqbal had formed a
group called ADB to assist Hasina and accumulated substantial assets in Gulshan
and Banani by abusing his power. These were allegations made by the prosecution
during the court hearing.
Regarding the defence's request for medical
treatment, the prosecutor said Iqbal could receive any facilities available to
him under the jail code.
The defence lawyers argued that Iqbal had served
as an information adviser, a position they described as equivalent to
ministerial rank, and therefore he should be entitled to relevant facilities
under the jail code.
The prosecution disputed the claim, saying he did
not hold a position carrying ministerial status.
The magistrate observed that the accused would
receive the facilities to which he was entitled based on his social standing.
No lawyer appeared on his behalf at the hearing, according to the supplied
information.
