Indian ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Nishikant Dubey has sparked controversy by calling for the “recovery” of Bangladesh's Chattogram Port, Noakhali and Sylhet, claiming the areas were historically linked to India.

Dubey alleged that former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru handed over these territories to Pakistan during the Partition of 1947. He argued that the loss of access to Chattogram Port left India's northeastern region at a disadvantage in terms of connectivity, trade and economic development.

The BJP parliamentarian claimed that the three areas were once part of the princely state of Tripura, also known as Tipra. According to him, Noakhali, Sylhet and Chattogram were transferred to Pakistan without proper consultation with Tripura's royal family, particularly Maharani Kanchan Prabha.

Dubey further alleged that following the death of Maharaja Bir Bikram Dev, the decision to transfer the territories was made without informing or consulting Maharani Kanchan Prabha. Questioning the historical basis of the territorial transfer, he asked under which provisions of the Radcliffe Line or the McMahon Line the areas were handed over to Pakistan.

The BJP MP argued that India's territorial losses were not limited to Kashmir, claiming that some areas now under Bangladesh's control also had historical links with India. Highlighting the strategic importance of Chattogram Port, Dubey said restoring India's access to the port would boost trade, connectivity and economic development in the country's northeastern states.

He argued that recovering Chattogram Port, Noakhali and Sylhet was necessary in the broader interest of India's development. Dubey's remarks have brought Bangladesh's sovereignty and the historical context of the 1947 Partition into the spotlight.
