The Actors' Equity Bangladesh has suspended the
memberships of popular actresses Tanjin Tisha and Samia Othoi indefinitely over
alleged violations of organisational discipline and non-compliance with
decisions made by its arbitration committee.
According to sources within the organisation, the
Actors' Equity Bangladesh has an independent arbitration committee responsible
for resolving disputes and disagreements among performers.
Following a dispute involving the two actresses,
they were summoned before the committee for arbitration. During the
proceedings, a decision was reportedly reached requiring both actresses to
issue written apologies and submit video statements.
However, neither actress reportedly implemented
the decisions.
The arbitration committee subsequently sent two
consecutive letters to them seeking compliance but received no response. The
letters were also returned undelivered.
Attempts to contact them by mobile phone were also unsuccessful, according to organisational sources. After waiting for an extended period, the arbitration committee recommended suspending their memberships indefinitely and forwarded the proposal to the executive committee.
The executive committee later approved the
recommendation unanimously at a meeting.
The organisation said show-cause notices were
issued to Tanjin Tisha and Samia Othoi on July 7. However, neither responded to
the notices.
Following the lack of response, the organisation
decided to suspend their memberships indefinitely in accordance with its
constitution.
Formal suspension notices bearing their names
were subsequently issued on October 4.
In a statement, the Actors' Equity Bangladesh
reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining discipline and professional standards
in workplaces and the entertainment industry.
The organisation also expressed hope that artists, as members of the same professional family, would continue to uphold mutual respect, brotherhood, discipline and goodwill.
