Speaking at a
briefing at the ACC headquarters in Segunbagicha on Thursday, Deputy Director
Akhtarul Islam said charge sheets against all 15 accused would be submitted to
the court soon.
The case was filed on
June 17, 2025, by ACC Assistant Director Sajjad Hossain. The other accused are
Abul Khair, deputy registrar of the Department of Cooperatives; his wife Kazi
Sadia Hasan; Abul Kalam Madbor; Konika Afroz; Mohammad Bashar; Sajed Madbor;
Aleya Begum; Kazi Fuad Hasan; Kazi Farid Hasan; Javed A. Matin; Zahed Kamal;
Humayun Kabir; and Tanvir Nizam.
According to the
ACC, the investigation relates to alleged manipulation of the stock market that
resulted in the embezzlement of Tk 2.56 billion and the laundering of the
funds.
The report also
notes that Shakib, a former Awami League lawmaker, is facing several other
investigations by the ACC over separate allegations, including illegal
gambling, gold smuggling, misappropriation of business funds and concealing
asset information in declarations submitted to the Election Commission.
Authorities have
also frozen his bank accounts through the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence
Unit (BFIU) over allegations of financial irregularities and market
manipulation.
The report further mentions that Shakib was previously suspended by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2019 for failing to report an approach from a bookmaker. It also refers to past allegations involving on-field misconduct, including disputes with umpires, breaking stumps in frustration and inappropriate behaviour toward spectators.
