Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday inaugurated the July Uprising Memorial Museum, established to preserve the memories and historical records of the 2024 mass uprising.With the inauguration, the museum has officially opened its doors to the public. The prime minister unveiled the commemorative plaque at the museum located in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital in the morning. Following the plaque unveiling, Surah Al-Fatihah was recited and prayers were offered.Later, Tarique Rahman visited different galleries and exhibitions of the museum. He observed preserved artefacts, photographs, documents and memorabilia related to the July uprising and learned about the events surrounding the movement.His daughter, Barrister Zaima Rahman, was also present during the visit.A documentary highlighting the events of the July uprising, public participation and the history of the movement’s victory was screened at the inaugural programme.The event was attended by former chief adviser of the interim government Prof Muhammad Yunus, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Culture Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury, Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Azam Khan and the prime minister’s adviser on information and culture Zahed Ur Rahman, among others.The museum has been established by transforming Ganabhaban, the former official residence of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, into a centre preserving the memories of the 2024 uprising. The opening of the museum had been delayed due to various complexities.It was finally inaugurated on the second anniversary of the July uprising.On August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh for India amid a student-led mass uprising. On August 8, an interim government led by Prof Muhammad Yunus took oath. Later, the government initiated the establishment of the July Uprising Memorial Museum at Ganabhaban with preserved materials and symbols related to the movement.The museum has been established as a historical institution to preserve the memory of Bangladesh’s democratic movement, present the true history of the struggle to future generations and honour the sacrifices of July martyrs and fighters.The museum will remain open only for invited guests on the inauguration day. It will be opened to the general public from Thursday.
