Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain expressed dissatisfaction over various irregularities and mismanagement during a surprise visit to Kalkini Upazila Health Complex in Madaripur on Tuesday.

During the inspection, the minister directed the authorities to relieve two nurses of their duties and announced departmental action against several doctors over alleged negligence and irregularities.

The minister visited different departments of the health complex from 10:00am to 12:00pm, spending around two hours inspecting its overall operations. He enquired about the quality of healthcare services, staff shortages, and the availability of medicines and vaccines.

He also examined the documents and legal status of several diagnostic centres located in front of the hospital.

After the inspection, he issued a stern warning to the concerned officials, urging them to address all irregularities and administrative shortcomings.

Speaking to those present, the minister said the authorities must acknowledge the mismanagement in the health sector.

He alleged that widespread looting had taken place during the 17 years of the Awami League government, with public funds from various ministry budgets siphoned off abroad.

The health sector is among the worst affected. Hospitals are facing shortages of manpower, vaccines and medicines. No proper attention was given to these institutions, he said.

Highlighting the government's plans to improve healthcare services, Sakhawat said former president Ziaur Rahman had established a 19-bed hospital, which was later expanded to 50 beds by former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

He claimed that no subsequent government had significantly expanded or developed the facility.

Under the instructions of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, plans have been taken to upgrade every upazila health complex across the country to 151 beds. In addition, a health centre will be established in every union, each staffed with a doctor, he said.

The minister also outlined several other government initiatives aimed at improving the country's healthcare system.

He further said departmental action would be taken against several doctors over allegations of negligence in their professional responsibilities and other irregularities at the hospital.

Kalkini Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Kishore Kumar Das, doctors of the health complex and officials from various government departments were present during the visit.

Kalkini Upazila BNP General Secretary Mahbub Hossain Munshi and leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organisations were also present.
