The incident took place around 7:30am in front of
Kurmitola General Hospital on the Airport Road. Police have detained three
people in connection with the attack.
Mohammad Gias Uddin, officer-in-charge of
Cantonment Police Station, confirmed the incident.
He said a cocktail was thrown at a police patrol
vehicle in front of the Army Golf Club from a motorcycle procession organised
by the banned Awami League. Constable Md Enamul, who was driving the vehicle,
sustained injuries in the attack.
The OC said police had detained three people and
were verifying their identities and involvement. The injured constable is
receiving treatment at a hospital.
Police are also examining CCTV footage to
identify and arrest the motorcycle riders involved in the attack, he added.
According to several police sources, a convoy of
around 70 to 80 motorcycles was travelling from the Banani area towards Kuril
Bishwa Road, chanting “Joy Bangla”.
When the procession reached the area in front of
Kurmitola General Hospital, a cocktail was allegedly hurled at the Cantonment
Police Station's patrol vehicle, identified as Golf Club-83.
The explosion caused minor injuries to Constable
Enamul's left eye. He was initially taken to the emergency department of
Kurmitola General Hospital and later transferred, on medical advice, to the
National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Agargaon. He is currently
receiving treatment there.
Meanwhile, a video circulated on social media
shows the procession being organised at the direction of Riaz Mahmud, president
of Dhaka Metropolitan North Chhatra League.
The participants were seen chanting various slogans before leaving the scene quickly amid the law enforcement agencies' response.
