Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has warned that the eight-point demands announced by the 11-party alliance in the interest of the people could turn into a one-point movement at any time.He made the remarks at a rally at Dhunat Mor in Sherpur upazila of Bogura around 4:00pm on Saturday, during the alliance’s long march from Dhaka to Rangpur.Shafiqur claimed that around 70 percent of voters had voted “yes” in a referendum. He alleged that the government had ignored the referendum result and insulted the people, prompting them to take to the streets.“There is no fertiliser for farmers, no food on people’s tables, no jobs for young people and no security at home,” he said. “There is no money in the banks, while a section of people remain busy with their ‘want more, want more’ politics.”Criticising another political party, the Jamaat chief alleged that although it had promised to create employment, it had instead put extortionists on the streets.He said the long march was not a programme of any single party but an initiative to establish the rights of the country’s 180 million people. He said the movement aims to eliminate corruption, extortion and domination from the country.Calling for unity to implement the 11-party alliance’s declared programme, Shafiqur said a movement in which women take to the streets could not fail. He referred to the July movement, saying mothers had also joined the streets with their children and that movement had succeeded.He warned that if the demands were not met, the alliance might have to take to the streets at any time with a one-point demand. He urged supporters to remain united and continue the movement.
