Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has alleged that the arrest of freedom fighter Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman has drawn widespread condemnation, saying he had committed no wrongdoing.
Parwar
said Akhtaruzzaman was acting within his civic rights after passengers, including
34 lawmakers, did not receive Zamzam water at the airport.
He
made the remarks on Saturday afternoon while addressing a protest rally
organised by Jamaat’s Dhaka city units at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram
National Mosque in protest against Akhtaruzzaman’s arrest.
The
real offence of Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman is not the airport incident. It is
his joining Jamaat-e-Islami, which has caused discomfort within the BNP, Parwar said.
He
demanded the immediate withdrawal of the case and remand order against
Akhtaruzzaman and his release.
Parwar
claimed that Akhtaruzzaman neither harassed anyone nor assaulted anyone at the
airport. Referring to remarks by the aviation minister, he said, The minister
went there and said that he had assaulted someone. If such a statement is
false, it amounts to violating the oath of office.
He
also said the dismissal of two officials had effectively acknowledged
mismanagement at the airport, while Akhtaruzzaman was nevertheless arrested in
what he described as a false case.
Criticising
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for describing Jamaat as a secretive and
anti-liberation organisation, Parwar referred to Jamaat’s past political
cooperation with BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda
Zia.
Your
father Ziaur Rahman and mother Khaleda Zia worked with Jamaat in political
movements to unite the nation. Have you become a more prudent politician than
them? he said.
Parwar
also criticised the prime minister by drawing a comparison between his remarks
and those of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. He further questioned whether
any “secret agreement” had been reached with Delhi.
The
rally was chaired by Dhaka North Jamaat Ameer Mohammad Selim Uddin. Among
others, Dhaka South Jamaat Secretary Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud, North Secretary
Dr Rezaul Karim, MP Kamal Hossain and DUCSU Vice-President Sadik Kayem
addressed the gathering.
After
the rally, a protest procession led by Parwar passed through areas including
Paltan intersection, the National Press Club and Matsya Bhaban.
