Food Minister Afroz Khanam Rita has said there is no distinction among Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians in Bangladesh, stressing that being Bangladeshi is the country’s greatest common identity.There is no difference between Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists and Christians. We are all Bangladeshis, and this is our greatest identity. Our honourable Prime Minister also views every person equally. The people of Bangladesh must preserve this harmony. It is becoming a source of our strength, she said.The minister made the remarks on Friday afternoon while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organised at Anandamoyee Kali Bari Temple in Manikganj town to mark Janmashtami, the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna.She said everyone should pledge on the occasion of Janmashtami to stand against injustice and refuse to tolerate wrongdoing.We will not encourage any injustice. We will stand by one another. Rising above religion and caste, we will live together in unity, she said.‘Religion is personal, festivals belong to everyone’Afroz Khanam Rita said communal harmony and mutual goodwill are among the greatest strengths of Bangladeshi society.Religion is personal, but festivals belong to everyone. We expect people of all faiths in Bangladesh to celebrate their respective religious festivals freely, she said.Later, the food minister inaugurated a colourful Janmashtami procession in Manikganj.The programme was chaired by District Puja Celebration Council President Pranab Shikdar Dulal and moderated by District Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Welfare Front General Secretary Gouranga Chandra Sarker. Among those present were District Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Welfare Front President Ranjit De, District Hindu Mahajote President Sunil Kumar Mondal, District Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council President Kalipada Ghosh, District Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Welfare Front Joint Convener Prabir Kumar Saha Chowdhury Mukul, District Jatiya Hindu Mahajote General Secretary Tapas Rajbangshi, District Puja Celebration Council Vice-President Anirban Pal, and leaders of the BNP and its affiliated organisations.
