The National Citizen Party (NCP) has demanded the immediate implementation of the referendum verdict and the dissolution of a government-formed committee tasked with amending the constitution, accusing the government of undermining the reform process.
At
an emergency press conference in the capital on Saturday, the party announced
three demands and made it clear that it would not participate in what it
described as the government's unilateral constitutional amendment process.
The
NCP's three demands are the immediate implementation of the referendum verdict,
the dissolution of the one-party constitutional amendment committee and the
prompt formation of a Constitution Reform Council.
The party also urged the public not to be misled into believing that it would join the government-formed committee. Presenting the party's position, NCP Member Secretary and MP Akhtar Hossain said a framework for forming a Constitution Reform Council had been developed through discussions at the Parliamentary Consensus Commission with the agreement of all political parties.
However, the government had bypassed that process and formed a committee to amend the constitution unilaterally, he alleged. Akhtar described the move as a gross betrayal of the referendum verdict and a conspiracy to derail reforms.
NCP political council member and joint convener Sarwar Tushar, political council member Saleh Uddin Sifat, joint convener Monira Sharmin and joint member secretary Faridul Haque were also present at the press conference.
