The seized liquor, valued at around Tk 7.7 lakh, was recovered on September 8, according to a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Thursday. The passengers arrived in Dhaka on Air India flight AI-2183 from Mumbai at around 9:45pm that day.
Acting on a tip-off, customs
intelligence officials kept the passengers under surveillance after they
completed immigration formalities and collected their baggage. They were
stopped and searched while attempting to leave through the green channel.
During the searches, 10 litres of liquor were recovered from the baggage of Azmul Haque, seven litres from Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan, six litres from Md Imran and another six litres from Babul Mia. Officials also recovered 3.5 litres each from the baggage of Md Nafiz Sabat and Al Amin Sheikh, and three litres from Saddam Hossain.
The NBR said it would investigate whether the
seizure was an isolated case of passengers carrying liquor individually or
whether the incident was part of a coordinated plan.
