India's Ministry of External Affairs has said the government has no involvement in an event in New Delhi where deposed former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to deliver a virtual address.

Responding to questions on Tuesday, the ministry's spokesperson said the programme was being organised by a private organisation and had no connection with the Government of India.

"The event in New Delhi is being organised by a private entity. The Government of India has no association with it," the spokesperson said.

Sheikh Hasina is expected to address the event virtually on August 5, marking the second anniversary of the student-led mass uprising in Bangladesh. The programme has been organised by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia.

Bangladesh had sought clarification from New Delhi regarding the Indian government's position on the planned event.
