Farid Uddin Gazi, 50, a
member of the Baufal upazila BNP, allegedly threatened businessman Gobinda
Chandra Mondal, 52, over his decision to contest the upcoming Union Parishad
chairman election.
Gobinda filed a general diary
against Farid at Baufal Police Station on Thursday (September 18). He also alleged
that Farid had previously demanded Tk 50 lakh from him and issued threats over
the phone.
In the audio, a man
identifying himself as Farid is heard saying that he had “chosen” Gobinda to be
burned. The recording also includes a discussion about Gobinda’s movements and
his return to the area.
Farid was arrested by police
on Thursday evening in a separate cheque fraud case. Baufal Police OC Sirajul
Islam said necessary legal action would also be taken over Gobinda’s complaint.
District BNP President Snehangshu
Sarker Kutty said the upazila unit had been asked to investigate the
allegations and recommend organisational action.
Farid’s statement could not
be obtained as he was arrested in the separate case. Police said the
allegations and authenticity of the audio would be investigated.
