From the 2027 academic year, students seeking admission to Class One in primary and secondary schools will not have to sit for any admission test. Instead, the admission process will be conducted through a lottery system, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Education on Thursday.

The ministry said in the notice that admission to Class One will be based on a lottery system. However, students seeking admission to other classes in primary and secondary schools will continue to be selected through admission tests.

Earlier, on March 16 this year, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr. A N M Ehsanul Haque Milan announced at a press conference that the lottery system for school admissions would be replaced by admission tests from the 2027 academic year.

At the time, the minister said the government was planning to introduce examinations instead of the lottery system for the annual admission process and had informed stakeholders in advance to ensure equal opportunities.

The lottery-based admission system for Class One was introduced for the first time in the 2011 academic year, replacing the traditional admission test. The same system was introduced in private schools in 2012.
