Fisheries and Livestock State Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku has said the BNP has led Bangladesh’s struggle for democracy and played a key role in restoring the country’s democratic system.Speaking at a public rally marking the BNP’s 48th founding anniversary at Shahid Smriti Poura Udyan in Tangail on Tuesday, he said BNP founder Ziaur Rahman introduced multiparty democracy after the BAKSAL period.Tuku said former prime minister Khaleda Zia led a nine-year movement for democracy, which eventually contributed to the establishment of parliamentary democracy.He claimed the BNP had led democratic movements from the 1975 Sepoy-People’s Revolution to the 2024 movement and had never opposed democracy.Highlighting the government’s activities, the state minister said the administration had begun implementing its election pledges within its first six months. Family Cards, Farmer Cards, allowances for imams and muezzins, canal excavation, tree plantation, and distribution of school bags and uniforms have already been initiated, he said. Tuku also warned of ongoing conspiracies against Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty and democracy, urging people to remain united against such efforts.
