BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has claimed that most of the government’s election pledges and programmes have been implemented within the first six months in office.Speaking at an emergency press conference at the BNP central office in Naya Paltan on Friday afternoon, Rizvi said the government had achieved 90 to 100 percent of its targets in different areas.“Overall, almost all the targets set for the first six months have been achieved. In some areas, the implementation rate is 90 or 95 percent, while in others it is 100 percent,” he said.Rizvi said the government needed time to establish the necessary administrative and institutional framework to implement its programmes. He expressed hope that implementation would become faster and more effective during the next six months.He also said detailed statistics on the government’s achievements over the past six months would be published soon.Resignation over president nominationResponding to a question about BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s resignation following his nomination for the presidency, Rizvi said there was no legal requirement for him to resign from his party or government positions before taking the oath of office.However, he said Fakhrul had decided to step down as BNP secretary general on ethical grounds.Rizvi recalls Khaleda Zia’s political roleAt the beginning of the press conference, Rizvi highlighted different aspects of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s political career.He said Khaleda Zia had never deviated from her commitment to independence, sovereignty and democracy, and had endured suffering, repression and persecution throughout her political career.Referring to the anti-Ershad movement, Rizvi described Khaleda Zia as a key source of inspiration for the movement led by students and the public.BNP will organise prayer programmes at its offices across the country on Saturday marking Khaleda Zia’s birthday. A prayer programme will be held at the party’s central office in Naya Paltan at 11am, while another will take place at the Gulshan office after Asr prayers, Rizvi said.Several senior BNP leaders and representatives of the party’s affiliated organisations were present at the press conference.
