A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside a moving, empty sleeper bus while travelling from Greater Noida’s Pari Chowk to Delhi’s Kashmere Gate, police said.

After the alleged assault, the driver and conductor reportedly abandoned the girl near the Kashmere Gate bus terminal on Delhi’s Ring Road and fled.

The girl later reached the Kashmere Gate police station and informed police about the incident. Police subsequently arrested the driver, Kuldeep, and conductor, Sandeep. The bus allegedly used in the crime has been seized and sent for forensic examination.

According to police, the incident took place on the night of August 4. The girl is a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district.

Police said she had left home without informing anyone after being reprimanded by her mother over her studies. She was travelling to a relative’s house in Noida Sector 63. Due to heavy rain and darkness, she mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk in Greater Noida.

While looking for another vehicle to reach her destination, she saw an empty sleeper bus and stopped it. Police said the bus had been taken to a workshop in Surajpur for repairs and was being driven towards a parking area in Timarpur after the repairs were completed.

There were no passengers on the bus. Police said conductor Sandeep allegedly misled the girl by telling her that the bus was heading towards Noida Sector 63. Believing him, she boarded the bus.

According to her complaint, the conductor allegedly began behaving inappropriately and making unwanted advances shortly after she boarded. She told police that both men then assaulted her and threatened to kill her when she resisted.

Police said the alleged assault continued while the bus travelled about 47 kilometres, with the accused allegedly taking turns inside the sleeper berths behind drawn curtains.

Later that night, the girl was allegedly abandoned on Ring Road in Delhi, after which the two suspects fled with the bus.

The girl then went to a nearby police post and reported the incident. Police analysed CCTV footage along the route and arrested the two suspects from a bus parking area in Timarpur on the same day.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (North Delhi) Niharika Bhat confirmed the arrests, saying Kuldeep and Sandeep had been taken into custody. The bus was seized and sent for forensic examination, while CCTV footage from the route was reviewed to collect evidence related to the incident.

Police said the girl underwent a medical examination and received counselling from women police officers. She was later handed over to her family in the presence of the Child Welfare Committee.

Cases have been filed against the two accused under provisions related to gang rape, kidnapping and forcible assault. They have been sent to judicial custody, police said.
