Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman has called for a roadmap to ensure that fascism is not rehabilitated in Bangladesh and that no one becomes a fascist in the future.He also urged people not to oppose others simply for the sake of opposition, saying those who ignore injustice and killings must open their eyes and fulfil their responsibilities as citizens.The minister made the remarks on Wednesday (August 26) while speaking as the chief guest at an award-giving ceremony organised by the Institute of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) at Hotel Sheraton in Banani, Dhaka. The event was arranged on the occasion of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH) to honour participants of a talent competition for visually impaired people and members of the third-gender community.Questioning the sense of responsibility among citizens, Asaduzzaman said most people in the country have the ability to see, but many of those expected to help build the country and uphold human values fail to recognise people's rights.“They are suffering from self-centredness,” he said.Referring to the visually impaired participants at the event, the minister said he could see signs of honesty and humanity on their faces. In contrast, he said, many people with normal eyesight fail to see injustice and violations of people's rights.Referring to the July uprising of 2024, Asaduzzaman alleged that around 1,400 people were killed in the streets within 20 days after being shot “like birds”. He also claimed that around 300 people lost their hands, legs or suffered severe head injuries.Mentioning a student of the English Department at Jahangirnagar University, he said part of the student's head was missing, yet many people who witnessed such incidents continue to claim that nothing happened.He alleged that people were shot and killed at night in the name of “crossfire”, while families continue to search for missing brothers, sisters, mothers and husbands.Addressing those allegedly trying to rehabilitate fascists, Asaduzzaman said, “Wherever you are, open your eyes. If we commit a crime, point it out to us.”He said Article 21 of the Constitution makes it the moral and constitutional responsibility of citizens to contribute to the country.The minister urged everyone to work from their respective positions with a sense of responsibility, saying Bangladesh could eventually become a livable country for future generations if citizens perform their duties properly.He acknowledged that mistakes could be made while carrying out responsibilities, but stressed the need to correct those mistakes and move forward.Speaking about people's responsibility and love for their homeland, Asaduzzaman said nothing is closer to a person than their mother and motherland, adding that sometimes the motherland can become even more important than one's mother.“We have to move towards a Bangladesh where freedom, democracy and the rule of law are firmly established,” he said.“A roadmap must be prepared so that fascism is not rehabilitated again and so that we do not become fascists ourselves.”The minister also urged people not to oppose others merely for the sake of opposition.“To those who cannot see the killings and wrongdoing of fascists, I would say: open your eyes. Open the two eyes given by Allah. If you cannot do that, open your inner eye. Then you will be able to see,” he said.Calling for unity in nation-building, Asaduzzaman said, “Let us walk together and move forward together. Let us focus on building the country.”Supreme Court Justice Faiz Ahmed, Institute of Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) President Lieutenant General (retd) M Nuruddin Khan, First Counsellor of the Iranian Embassy Esrafil Amiri Gorzaddini, Dhaka Bank PLC Managing Director Osman Ershad Faiz and Standard Chartered Bank Managing Director Enamul Haque were present as special guests.Prizes were distributed among the winners of the talent competition at the event.
