None of the 16 students who appeared in the 2026 Dakhil examination from Suturia Fazlul Haque Khan Dakhil Madrasa in Belabo upazila of Narsingdi has passed, despite the institution having 18 teachers. Of the examinees, seven were girls and nine were boys.The result has sparked anger among parents and local residents. They alleged that irregular classes by teachers and weaknesses in the institution's overall management have contributed to poor academic performance.Established in 1987, the madrasa was later brought under the MPO scheme. According to the madrasa authorities, it currently has around 200 students. Teachers said 20 students are expected to sit for the Dakhil examination from the institution in 2027.10 classrooms, but classes held in just twoA visit to the madrasa on Wednesday found around 20 students present across Classes 9 and 10 and the primary section. Due to the low number of students, more than one class was being taught in a single room.The institution has 10 classrooms, but several are in poor condition. Broken sheets and other damaged materials were seen piled up in some rooms.Parents alleged that teachers do not conduct classes regularly. They also claimed that despite repeatedly raising the issue with the authorities, no effective changes have been made.Bacchu Mia, father of said, a student who failed the Dakhil examination, said, “No teacher properly teaches here. They sit around talking and leave whenever they want. My son failed in two subjects last year. He sat for the exam again this year but failed again. We have complained repeatedly, but our concerns were not taken seriously.”The madrasa used to be vibrantTouhid, a former student of the madrasa, said he completed his studies there in 2007. According to him, the institution was quite vibrant at that time, but both student numbers and academic results have declined.“Now you find only one or two students in each class. The teachers sit around and chat. There are also problems with the management. Sixteen students sat for the exam, and not a single one passed, while there are 18 teachers,” he alleged.Local resident Toufazzal Hossain said, “It is embarrassing that all 16 students failed. How can this happen when there are 18 teachers? The matter needs to be investigated.”I am shocked by the resultMadrasa headteacher Siddiqur Rahman, however, attributed the poor result to a lack of classrooms and an inadequate learning environment.“I am shocked by this result. I have no words to explain it. All the students should not have failed together. I am looking into why this happened. We are also preparing to apply for re-evaluation of the answer scripts of the students who failed,” he said.He added, How can I conduct classes when the classrooms themselves are not in proper condition? The institution has been here for 40 years, but it has not been modernised. Nine classes are being run using only two rooms. Many of our students struggle to continue their studies. I will try to ensure a 100 percent pass rate next year.A 100 percent failure rate cannot be acceptedBelabo Upazila Education Officer Golam Faruk said a letter would be sent to the madrasa authorities seeking an explanation for the poor result.“The headteacher will be called in to explain the reasons behind this disastrous result and present a plan for improvement. We will hear what they have to say before taking further action,” he said.Regarding the madrasa authorities' claim that poor learning conditions contributed to the result, Faruk said, “Even if students study under a tree, five or seven of them would pass. I will discuss the issue of renovating the building. But a 100 percent failure rate cannot be accepted.”He said most of the students failed in Bangla and History. The failure of all 16 examinees has raised fresh questions about the madrasa's teaching practices, learning environment and the accountability of its teachers. Local residents hope the authorities will investigate the matter and take necessary measures to improve the institution's results next year.
