BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has called a meeting of the party’s Standing Committee at noon today to finalise its candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
The meeting is
scheduled for 12pm on Thursday, where the party’s top decision-making body is
expected to take the final decision on the presidential candidate. BNP will
subsequently submit the nomination papers on behalf of its chosen candidate.
Party sources said
discussions are underway at the policymaking level over who should represent
BNP in the presidential election. The matter is expected to be settled at
Thursday’s Standing Committee meeting.
The deadline for
submitting nomination papers is August 13. BNP has therefore planned to
finalise its candidate and submit the nomination on the final day.
The name of BNP
Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has recently emerged in
discussions over the party’s possible presidential candidate. However, the
party has not made any official announcement regarding his candidacy.
The final decision will be taken at the Standing Committee meeting, party sources said.
