A Dhaka tribunal has sentenced Md Sanaullah to death and fined him Tk 100,000 for killing his wife by pouring hot water on her over a dowry dispute.

Judge Munsi Md Mashiur Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict on Monday.

According to the case statement, Sanaullah assaulted his wife, Rubina Akter Pinky, over dowry on May 5, 2006. At one point, he heated water on a kerosene stove and poured it over her body.

She suffered severe burns and was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after neighbours rescued her following her screams. She later died at the hospital.

Rubina’s mother, Rabia Akter, filed a murder case with Kamrangirchar Police Station against Sanaullah and nine others.

Police submitted a charge sheet against Sanaullah on November 20, 2006. As allegations against the other nine accused could not be established, police recommended their discharge.
