The victim, Saiful Islam, 55,
was a two-time elected member of Nunagola Union Parishad. He was the son of the
late Abed Ali Mondal of Ashokola Eastpara in Bogura Sadar.
The incident occurred around
10pm near Baghopara Bridge in Nunagola Union.
According to local residents
and family members, Saiful had gone to Baghopara Bandar Mor to have tea. While
returning home, he was stopped near the bridge by a group of men. Two men,
identified as Ramzan and Nizhum, allegedly attacked him with machetes, leaving
him critically injured.
Locals attempted to take him
to hospital, but he died before he could be taken there, family members said.
Eyewitness Rakib Mia said he
was returning home with Saiful after having tea when the attackers stopped them
after they crossed the bridge. They allegedly first pushed them before
repeatedly hacking Saiful. Rakib said he was threatened with death if he
disclosed their identities.
Saiful’s niece, Sharmin
Khatun, said her uncle had been involved in local mediation and arbitration as
a former UP member and may have had disputes with others.
We believe he was
deliberately killed over a previous dispute. We want the killers arrested and
given the highest punishment, she said.
Bogura Sadar Police Station
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ibrahim Ali said police found multiple injury marks
on Saiful’s body and collected several pieces of evidence from the crime scene.
The suspects have already
been identified. However, their names cannot be disclosed at this stage in the
interest of the investigation, he said.
Police teams are conducting
raids to arrest those involved, while investigators are also examining the
motive behind the killing.
No one had been arrested in connection with the killing until the latest report.
